Attendees will get a “crash course” in oral health and learn simple recommendations that will help with all of the students/individuals they work with, including information on the sources of dental disease, the most common chronic disease affecting children. Information will also be provided on helping students access dental care, oral health disparities, school guidelines, broad suggestions for addressing oral health in schools, and ways to help families seek care and services outside of school.

Learning Objectives

1. Recognize key indicators of pediatric dental health issues: Understand the common signs and risk factors associated with poor oral health in children, including early detection methods that can be used in school settings.

 

2. Identify evidence-based interventions for promoting dental health: Learn about practical, evidence-based health interventions that can be implemented in schools to prevent tooth decay and other oral health issues.

 

3. Integrate dental health education into school settings: Explore strategies for incorporating dental health education into existing school programs and routines, fostering a culture of prevention among students.

 

4. Develop a personalized action plan for supporting dental health: Encourage school nurses to leverage their own experiences and practices to create or adapt strategies tailored to the needs of their student population and build a sufficient referral network.
